Shiang Garden Restaurant Wedding | Grace & Kai 01.01.2008 | weddings

Forty-eight hours ago, on June 27th, I was beginning my twelve-hour photography coverage of Grace and Kai's wedding day. I had been scratching my head all week as to why I would decide to shoot an all-day wedding, drive home and then get on a plane only eight hours later to California for ten days. I thought I was crazy. However, when I arrived to Grace's hotel room the morning of the wedding and was met by her huge smile and her calm demeanor I remembered... this was why. Grace and Kai are two of the sweetest, most loving, most generous, most selfless people I know.

Individually, they have the ability to change the atmosphere of a room: they bring a certain calmness. Together, they are a compassionate couple that I can confidently state will be showing God's love and peace to all those they encounter for years to come. Friends for fifteen years, dating for ten: this day has been a long time coming. And now it has come and gone. Grace and Kai, you both make me feel so welcome and so loved in your presence. I've so enjoyed getting to know you over more than a couple of coffee meetings, our engagement session together, and spending your wedding day with you.

Thank you for how you selflessly think of others... constantly. From providing myself and my two assistants, Laura and Camille, tuna sandwiches and bottled water for lunch (so unexpected!), periodically asking if we need anything else, refusing to worry or stress about any aspect of the day, blessing us with a thank-you card at the end of the evening. It was your day, but you made it about those who supported you as a couple. What an example you two are! I wish you a lovely time in Victoria and an even lovelier time during your honeymoon to Hong Kong this Fall. Love, J.

Grace and her girls got ready in a great hotel room at the Sheraton Wall Centre in Vancouver. I loved how you can see downtown buildings in this dress shot.

I like this shot. I'm proud of it. :)

Grace had a great bouquet. I was lovin' it.

This moment was so sweet. Grace was walked down the aisle to meet her soon-to-be husband by both her father and mother and she cried (sobbed) the whole way.

I believe the Father here was in the middle of an analogy including investment banking and marriage. Heh!

Our Lady of Sorrows Church, had this wonderful blue tile wall that I knew we needed to use!

She's so beautiful and smiley!

Grace and Kai had a really fun bridal party: I love loud bridal parties that won't stop talking! It's so fun.

One of my favourites of the day.

The reception was held at the Shiang Garden Restaurant; a beautiful venue with some beautiful details.

My second-shooter Laura Marchbanks caught this image: I adore it. I love how emotional Grace is: what is life without a few happy tears along the way?

Halfway through the evening Grace changed into a traditional Chinese dress to honour Kai's Chinese background. She looked breathtaking and I loved her shoes!

Grace and Kai, the entire bridal party and the parents of the bride and groom went around individually to each table toasting and making a lot of noise. Hah! There was even a musical performance at one of the tables that involved chopsticks and their dinner plates.

This wedding reception was so fun. My assistants and I were cracking up with laughter the whole evening. Here's Kai in the middle of one of their crazy games.

The happy couple after a traditional Filipino money dance. I think I'd like to start this tradition for Western receptions. I like the idea. ;)

All-Nighters Thrill Me 01.01.2008 | personal

It's Saturday morning. My eyes are barely open. It's just after 7 o 'clock. I'm shooting a 12 hour wedding day today, alongwith Laura Marchbanks and Camille Elise. I get home at 11:30PM and then I'll back-up images, finish packing, and be outta the house by 7:30AM to fly to California for tens days. Clinically insane? I'm about to diagnose myself as such. ;)

Nothing I'm thinking right now is coming out coherently, but here are a few random observations from the past forty-eight hours. My brother graduated on Thursday night and I watched him walk across the stage while lifting his hand to the audience as if to say, "Yeah, that's me. I'm Brandon, the coolest guy in the grad class." Last night (Friday) was his grad banquet ("prom" for Americans)--even though I didn't attend, this has caused me to rediscover that I was never seventeen. I've never been a teenager.

The idea of staying out until six in the morning does not thrill me. Rather, it literally thrills me. Like it scares me. I want to run the opposite direction in a full-fledge sprint whenever I hear somebody mention an all-nighter. I also had the pleasure of being woken up at 6AM this morning by a barking dog, Taylor. Apparently she didn't like my brother and a gaggle of strange boys coming into our house first thing in the morning... or evening for them.

Another thought: I hate traffic. Laura and I were touring around Vancouver yesterday and I made some pretty weird noises while sitting behind car after car after car on the highway. Blog post about such noises forthcoming. Happy Saturday!

Vancouver Engagement Photography | Laura & Darren 01.01.2008 | engagements

We share a love for "doodles." Darren & Laura have a three-year-old ball of Goldendoodle energy named Gallagher. I, of course have my love Taylor, a six-year old Labradoodle. We share a love for blogging and writing. Darren has a widely-recognized blog called Timing and Delivery that reviews services all across the country: specifically Vancouver, Calgary and Toronto. If you've never checked out his blog I encourage you too, his writing always makes me laugh! (You can check out these posts specifically: 1, 2, 3) We share a love for running outdoors: one of Laura's favourite pasttimes is taking Gallagher for a run through the trails and forest on the UBC Endowment Lands.

I arrived to their engagement session and greeted Laura and Darren with a hug, not a handshake. Handshakes are for first meetings; not for someone who is going to spend your wedding day with you. I feel so comfortable with Laura & Darren because we've had a lot of opportunities to spend time together already! Namely, in January, I photographed Laura's 30th Birthday party at Cobre Restaurant in Vancouver. Before her birthday party, I met them at their apartment where we chatted about all things wedding and photography and blogs and business. Laura also treated me to a pretty dang great cup of coffee at the very chic 49th Parallel a couple weeks after her party.

I am ridiculously excited for their wedding. Crazy excited. Every wedding is beautiful in its own way: every couple has their own style, their own vibe, their own flavour. I can walk into a beautiful reception room and think, "Holy cow, this is AMAZING"--but it's not always going to have the same "vibe" I want my wedding reception to have. That's why I LOVE style and I LOVE weddings! Personal taste. Saying all this to say, every detail Laura+Darren have talked about for their reception is blowing my mind. I cannot wait for their September 4th wedding... the rest of you will just have to wait and see! :)

I loved their outfits they wore: my couples have great style. Laura called Darren her "stylist" in an email dicussing the session: Hah! :)

They chose a great location too; very urban, very them!

Love this. So cute.

One of my favourites.

I told Laura to look off to the side for this shot, but unfortunately that meant she was just looking at a bunch of construction workers already staring at us! Awkwarddd.

After a quick change Laura and Darren stopped by their house to pick up Gallagher and we headed to the beach. It was a pretty overcast day last night. We get light up in Vancouver in the summer until about 9:30PM, but it was 8:30PM when we shot these and it was darrrrk!

Cute. :) Makes me smile.

Oh Gallagher, thanks for being you.

Happy. :)

Ooooh. I love this. I do, I do.
