Jess Janz 01.01.2008 | , portraits

I am constantly babbling on and on about time. I think time is just so fascinating; looking back into and remembering the past, dreaming about the future. Just a little more than a year ago, I photographed my friend Jess' concert at Ft. Langley Hall. I blogged about the concert here. Now, thirteen months later, I'm back photographing another show of hers at the same venue.

I can't help but think about all the life experiences every year brings. Jess just spent three months in Europe at the beginning of this year. I see a renewed sense of passion and excitement for travel in her heart since she's returned, not to mention a love for Jesus that grows everyday. I'm so honoured to call her friend.

ALSO! She has finally and I re-emphasize finally after two years of her pursuing this music thing more-seriously put up a myspace page.Wahoo! :) Please check it out and notice the fabulous banner. Um, yup, that was meee! Jess is off to Ontario for three and a half months this summer to be a camp counsellor, but I can't wait to see what the Fall holds for her, not to mention 2010.

I love this hall--it's so beautiful. Especially in the winter with the snow and a christmas tree out front and a cup of coffee in your hand and ahhh! I'm going to get some hate mail for wanting winter just when it's warming up in Vancouver. ;)

She's kinda real cute and stuff. ;)

Love you Jess!

Real Weddings | Spring/Summer 2009 01.01.2008 |

As I was writing my May 18th post a few days ago, I remember thinking about typing, "I never dreamed all this would happen in one year." I didn't end up writing that because I have to confess... I did.

I dream big. I dream a lot. And I'm learning to do so a little more unashamedly. I'm not sure I verbalized those dreams at the beginning of my career... perhaps for fear of looking stupid or childish. But inside my heart, I did dream about getting published (specifically in Real Weddings, one of my favourite BC Bridal magazines) and in November I got to see one of my weddings in print: Kristina and Marshall's wedding in Urban Wedding Magazine. I was still dreaming for having a wedding published in Real Weddings magazine.

I was notified in April that one of my images from Alanna and Stanley's Granville Island engagement session had been selected to appear in a "Will You Marry Me?" feature in the Spring/Summer issue of Real Weddings magazine. Woo! I was so excited when I got the call from Lara, the editor in charge of my submission.

The amazing thing about dreaming big is even if you don't reach your goal right away you reach so many fun ones along the way. My big goal was a wedding in Real Weddings, but I first reached Urban Wedding and then an engagement image in Real Weddings. Watch out for a wedding published in that magazine in Fall 2009 or in 2010... I'm not afraid to dream. ;)

Handmade Lovelies by Lauren 01.01.2008 |

I pushed my way through the ridiculously crowded hallways of the MGM Grand, full of photographers waiting to get into Jessica Claire's platform talk at WPPI. I walked into the bathroom and was greeted with a giant "JAMIE DELAINEEEEE!" and a massive smile and hug from Lauren Chapman as well as her friend Jessica Strickland. I had never met either of them before but I definitely blog-stalk religiously. These two are sweethearts and we talked each others ears off for the three minutes we had before rushing back into the crowed conference room. Lauren has one of the best smiles, well... ever, can pull off bright red lipstick like none other and has an incredibe fashion sense to boot. My kind of girl.

Lauren announced a couple of weeks ago, on her and her husband Robbie's photography blog, OpenField Photography, that she was launching a new business creating hair accessories and hair pieces called Handmade Lovelies. I was SO excited for her, because this woman has some incredible talent. From her etsy store description, "all lovelies are one-of-a-kind and are made by me...whenever possible, i try to use recycled materials, which include great finds from antique stores and all my favorite flea markets." Awesome hey?

I sent Lauren an @reply on twitter to congratulate her for launching her new business and the next thing I know, she's mailing me a hairpiece! What a ridiculously kind offer; she's TOO much! It came in the mail last week and I'm just in looooove. Thanks again Lauren!

Not bad for a self-portrait, if I do say so myself.

Hand-written notes. Way to my heart.
