we arrived at trinity baptist church friday afternoon and greeted the beautiful bride carly and her four bridesmaids, all patiently anticipating the events of the day. for almost two hours, carly’s bridesmaids and mom chatted & laughed in the prayer chapel. when it was finally time, carly smiled her way into her wedding dress. a few minutes before three o’ clock, theo and his groomsmen arrived at the church and took their places at the front of the sanctuary. carly and theo are definitely in the running for the cutest/happiest couple i’ve photographed. so much joy on their wedding day — not even a broken ankle could squelch their emotion. [yes, that’s right. theo broke his ankle six weeks ago, had surgery, and used a walking cane for all but the ceremony.]
it blesses my heart to be a part of weddings centered around Jesus. the mystery of marriage will never seem commonplace to me. the metaphor of a husband loving his wife like Christ has loved the church, a wife trusting her husband like the church trusts Christ. it’s big. marriage is big. placing your entire life in someone else’s hands is big. being able to witness [and photograph] the first day of such a commitment is incredible.
after the ceremony, we headed to granville island to take bridal party photos right near their venue: performance works. everything about the day was relaxed — the light was phenomenal — everybody was a treat to work with. the do-it-yourself details inside performance works were amazing. earlier that morning, the lights were strung, tables set out, chalkboard signs hung all by theo, his groomsmen, and the rest of the team. commitment! it was perfect decor for that space. i’m obsessed with long tables. something i loved about carly+theo’s wedding was their speeches. i love that, as a photographer, it allows me a little glimpse into who the people i photograph are. these two have such a heart for jesus. and for the church. and their families love the Lord. and it makes me want to love my family and my friends deeper. pretty special people. to finish off the evening, at eleven o’ clock the newlyweds exited the reception surrounded by sparklers! surreal.
carly + theo, i loved loved loved seeing you two become husband + wife. thanks for having me.
