Shootsac Walk About with Jessica Claire

Jun 4

Sometimes life is ridiculous. Absolutely ridiculous. You never know what a day will hold. Yesterday morning, after I blogged about the life of my car, I went to the tire repair store. I was waiting in line. Checked my email on my iPhone (yes, I had just checked it 15 minutes beforehand–I need to stop being so obsessive) and I saw an email from Shootsac. The title was “Announcing the Shootsac Walk About Winners.” Right! I entered that. While the email was loading I thought, “That would be ridiculous if I won.” And I won. Weird.

I was telling my friend Shauneille I kinda squinted my eyes, turned my head to the side (like my dog Jeffrey) and began to move into planning mode. Ahh, what? Okay. Three weeks. What? How am I going to get there? Am I even available? Check Google Calendar, yes I’m available, wouldn’t have entered if I wasn’t available. Do I really want to fly across the continent in a few weeks? Planes make me tired when I travel alone. I’m shooting five weddings in June. I’m traveling for two of them already. Don’t want to go alone. NYC is huge. Not even a big fan of the city. Hmmm, I wonder if Kristen will come with me? She only lives a few hours away. Pick up the phone, leave a voicemail. Thinking, thinking, thinking. Look up flights on Travelocity. Google map the Adorama building address in relation to Newark airport and JFK airport. Facebook chat with Kristen. She couldn’t get to the city until a day after me. And I don’t want to fly alone. I get so bored. Think, think. Flights. Not that expensive. I should take someone. Make a trip out of it. Make it fun. Shauneille. I’ll take Shauneille. And we’ll see the city together and ride the subway and walk together in Central Park and talk about how beautiful life is and take fun photos and dream together & all of the traveling and hectic schedules will be worth it because I’ll be doing it with someone I LOVE. Text Shauneille, “I have a crazy idea. Come to NYC with me.” She freaks out. We text rapid-fire. She’s free. I’m free. I book the flights.

We’re going to NYC.

I’m so so SO excited to have been given this opportunity to shoot alongside Jessica Claire. I admit, I’m not an New York City lover. I’m just not. BUT, I’m leaving my mind open and hoping that the third time is a charm. I want to fall in love with the city. Pretty sure sharing the trip with Shauneille will be awesome, too—and help in the “fall in love with NYC” mission. Shauneille is also a photographer and one of my second shooters this summer. This brings me to my next point. We want to book some portrait sessions in the city.

I’ll be available to shoot Monday evening, June 28th, all day June 29th and the morning of June 30th. I’d love to book one shoot a day–and photograph as much of the city as possible. If you or anybody you know would be interested in booking a session, please get them to email me at jamie[at]jamiedelaine.com — that would be MUCHO appreciated. The other thing? I know there are a lot of NYC lovers out there: why do you love it? what should we see and do? Eeee!

Here are some photos from my last trip to NYC in September. Okay, so I guess it’s pretty. ;)

I love New York City!! The absolute number one thing you should do is go to the restaurant Junior’s and order their cheesecake. They’re famous for it and it is so good. I don’t even like cheesecake that much and thought it was amazing. Also go to Amy’s Bread. A local recommended it to us, and it was really good as well. Other things to do: Rockefeller Center, it’s awesome. Definitely go there. Walk the Brooklyn Bridge, take the Staten Island Ferry, go to Chinatown. Oh and go to 5th Avenue of course. Although it can make you go broke fast. :) Hope you have an awesome trip!

Ooooh..you are going to have SO much fun! And going sans parents? Even better ;) As for what to do – find someone with access to a rooftop. Preferably at night. Preferably within viewing distance of Matt Damon’s apartment. That’s all I’m saying ;) http://gailwernerblog.com/how-to-have-an-awesome-time-in-new-york-city/

I just wanted to let you know that for the last year I’ve been obsessive about checking Jessica Claire’s blog. And then I happened upon your blog….and now your blog is the one I check obsessively. Which, I guess sounds a little creepy! But, what I mean is, your photography seems to touch me in a little more of a special way. I just thought I’d let you know :) Keep up the awesome work!

Oh my gosh! I could totally hear myself thinking all those same thoughts — and then because it’s you and not me I also always add — you are so brave and so lucky and so smart. Life is amazing if you step up to meet it :) I think you’re right — the 3rd time — just might be the charm. Have an amazing time on the Shootsac Walkabout!!! Can’t wait to see it through your eyes :)

I just went to New York for the first time last month! I love the shows. I’m a huge music person and I LOVED seeing the musicals. I saw Memphis, Promises, Promises, and Billy Elliot while I was there…the best one was Memphis — BUT, if you’ve never seen a musical — Wicked is by far the best, plus it’s lined with Christian values that also makes it kind of incredible. Or In The Heights, also good.Amazing varied food around every corner. Crumbs cupcakes. Yummmm. Magnolia Bakery is supposed to be good too.The stores are overwhelming but enjoyable — I live in a rural area so there were a lot of stores I’ve only seen online that I got to go into — kind of entertaining for me.Something free — the people watching in New York is some of the best people watching anywhere. It’s like a pysch experiment. I just really enjoy looking at how different their lives are from mine — but how no matter where people are and how different they may be, the basics are the same. People find joy in the same ways everywhere. Soooo cool.

  16. Bailey :

I didn’t win :( But glad you did! HAVE FUN!!!

  17. Melanie:

Congrats on winning! :) I bet you will have a great time. I love visiting NYC, but I don’t think I’d ever want to live there. I especially enjoyed the Central Park Zoo (I think that is where I saw the penguins in a really cool set up) and Central Park in general. There are so many photo ops there. I wish I had been into photography last time I was there. Also, you can rent boats and row across the lake, (a friend did that for me once) or if you don’t want to do that much work, you can rent a Gondola with gondolier. I even found it online:http://www.thecentralparkboathouse.com/sections/gondola.htmI'd love to see something on Broadway someday.

Congrats on the trip. I hope you’ll get inspired with the workshop and Jessica. Being a native NY’er all my life… I still {heart} NY… more and more all the time. There SO MUCH to see and do. It seems like you’re daring… so just go with the flow. Take a subway, go to a museum, head into Brooklyn (there’s some "old" NY there), make new friends. I have always tried to make friends in other cities so when I do travel – there’s always a friendly face to meet. You’ll find something to love NY (I’m sure). HAve a great time!

  19. Gabriella B:

Vancouver, BC is hard to beat as far as beauty, you are lucky to live in one of the most beautiful places in North America, so I understan why New York wouldn’t win ove your heart..but I hope you have a better trip this time. My husband is from Vancouver, BC. Love your work!

  20. erin.:

Hey Jamie,I was so excited to read this post. New York really isn’t a scary place but you definitely need to know where your going. I love the theatre district, Greenwich Village (where my Mom grew up), and the artsy areas. There is also a delicious pasta place near Times Square that is fabulously decorated called Simply Pasta. I would totally love to sign up for one of your portrait sessions, however, I don’t have a need for any kind of portraits at this time

  21. Marissa Rodriguez:

This post? I love it. You are so cute. I love reading about everything that you do! I get a load of energy every time I visit your blog! :)

  22. Alexandra:

  23. Uyen:

I love New York… I think you have to be 21 to fully enjoy everything that New York has to offer. It is definitely a city for night owls.

  24. Truc:

Congrats on winning the contest and getting to shoot alongside Jessica Claire. Enjoy the trip! It sounds like it’ll be loads of fun!

  25. Deborah Zoe:

OOOkk.. if you want some cool photos ops you might want to check out the High Line. It’s in Chelsea, which is also pretty cool. Definitely make a trip to Magnolia’s in West Village for delicious cupcakes. while standing in line one time Bruce Willis walked by and said woooooweeee thats a big line. oh boy;) so you might even see a celebrity… but before you go to the West Village, MAKE SURE to have dinner in the East Village. Awesome little shops and amazing restaurants… have fun girl!

  26. Megan:
