Cecil Green Park House Wedding: Heather and Sukie

Since the moment I met these two, I was looking forward to being a part of their wedding day. I knew it would be unlike anything I had ever experienced, as they were having a Sikh ceremony and reception as well as a Western ceremony and reception. It was a very eventful two days, but I had a lot of fun experiencing a new culture and observing a new religion. I feel like I learned a lot! Heather and Sukie, congratulations once again on a beautiful wedding. Enjoy!

The Sikh ceremony was on Tuesday morning at a Sikh temple in Vancouver. I had no idea what to expect, and I don’t think Heather did either–which put my mind at ease! Shortly after I arrived, Sukie arrived as well as the temple. There were many traditions that were carried out from the moment he arrived. The first was introductions between the family, where the male members of the bride and the groom’s family exchange garlands.

After this, everyone drank tea and had refreshments in the Langar Hall downstairs, while Heather was still hidden (the bride is not present during the introductions outside). After tea, the ceremony began. All men and women were required to have their head covered during the introductions outside, during tea and the ceremony and then for lunch afterwards as well. Heather was so cute: as I was eating a quick bite after the ceremony she came up to me and said (referring to my headscarf): “You look like one of those foreign journalists!”

Heather’s parents both escorted her into the temple after all the guests were seated, including Sukie at the front of the room. During the ceremony, the bride and groom sat side by side at the front. All the men present sat on the right side of the temple and all the women guests on the left. Sukie and Heather were not supposed to speak during the ceremony, but I caught this moment after all the events had ended.

Aren’t these details amazing? I was in love with all the colors.

Now onto the second day, Wednesday morning. The ceremony and reception were both held at Cecil Green Park House at UBC an amazing venue with great views of the mountains and the ocean. I arrived just as Heather was starting to get ready in the morning.

All the bridesmaids and Heather did their hair and makeup in a Library, so I knew I had to make use of the surroundings for a shoe shot!

An emotional moment with Heather and her father.

And on the other side, too:

The Cecil Green property is full of amazing doors and neat corners for photographs.

Heather and Sukie planned lots of time for photos, which was amazing for me! Heather also pulled out this adorable lace eyelet parasol for beach shots.

Their bridal party was a blast and had some great ideas, haha!

Wednesday evening was the Sikh reception, an affair with over 250 guests. I loved Heather and Sukie’s grand entrance and first dance.

They also had great entertainment at the reception, including music videos before the bride and groom arrived, a family slideshow and this incredible group of young dancers. They danced a traditional dance that must have lasted over five minutes, I was in awe!

What a fun two days–thanks again, Heather and Sukie for letting me capture your wedding…twice! Watch the slideshow below, or click here to open it in a new window.
