Exploring Ucluelet and Tofino

Randy and I had an amazing getaway this past weekend to Ucluelet and Tofino with his best friend Mark and his wife Kim. Randy is originally from the Comox Valley on Vancouver Island (where Mark and Kim still live) and we had been there all week staying with Randy’s Mom. Tofino is located on the very-most western point of Vancouver Island (basically… the west coast of the west coast!) and it’s quite the trek from the Vancouver area – a full day of travel. But from Comox Valley? It’s only a three hours drive! The best.

I have traveled to the Tofino area twice before, both for weddings, first for Joanna & Alex’s wedding and next Rebecca & Nick’s wedding, both at Middle Beach Lodge. Two words that come to mind when I explain Tofino/Ucluelet to people who haven’t been… ethereal and surreal. It feels like you are in a dream-world there. The rainforest air is humid and fresh – at the same time. Even in January, it was quite warm when the wind died down. (In fact, It was warmer in Ucluelet than back home! We went for a walk and by the end of the hour I was carrying my jacket and wearing only my t-shirt.)

We used our favourite, VRBO, to find an incredible place right on the ocean called Cygnet Coves Suites. Naomie and Jeff, who own the house, live in the top two stories, and they rent out nightly two suites in the walk-out basement. Both suites are connected by a galley kitchen. It was perfect for Mark and Kim and Randy and I. I don’t think I’ve ever stayed in a place with a view quite as beautiful as Cygnet Coves. The town of Ucluelet is right on a peninsula and the neighbourhood we stayed in was absolutely surrounded by the ocean.

If you can’t tell from my babbling – you have to go.

Randy and I will be back in Tofino this July to photograph another wedding, so we did a bit of location scouting during our time there. This is Tonquin Beach Park, a beach I had never heard of – but we’ll be photographing an intimate six-person wedding this summer here! I loved the walkway down to the beach.

Thanks to Mark for taking the above photo of us! P.S. If you like my shirt… you can get one for yourselves from The School Sessions website.  Click “shop” and find Womens Tee Shirts. I’m wearing a black medium!

More photos of Cygnet Coves Suites. Look at that DECK. Can we live here? (Like… a month a year. Because Ucluelet is pretty middle-of-nowhere. Not middle. End-of-nowhere because it’s on the coast. But I could do a month.)

We had so much fun with our pup, Harley. He’s four months old in a couple of days! He’s growing like a weed and because of Tofino’s expansive beaches, we were able to let him off-leash. (We don’t trust him near traffic or in our suburban neighbourhood. He’s not the best at coming…)

He was in his GLORY. He ran around the full hour at Chesterman Beach. He kept finding all these different muscles on the sand and was so proud to carry them around showing off his prize.

I like to call this my “here I am” pose.

Finally, my good looking, incredible husband. The best eyes, the best beard-stubble, the best hair, the best hugger, the best partner. I love you. Thanks for an amazing ten days on Vancouver Island.

Let’s buy a cabin there one day.

P.S. If you or anyone you know is looking for a Ucluelet Wedding Photographer or a Tofino Wedding Photographer, you could kindly direct them to my website. I love visiting this part of Vancouver Island for Wedding Photos!
