Instagram is an awesome platform for sharing your brand and business with the world. It’s simple, it’s clean, based around great photography and easy to use and understand. Best of all, every one of your followers will see your posts. (For now. Instagram could evolve someday like Facebook has! We’ll cross our fingers it doesn’t.)

[Update] Due to the overwhelming popularity of this post, I’ve created a Grow Your Biz with Instagram Course! To join the waitlist for my free 3-part training, click here!

I’ve been using Instagram since the beginning of the platform and it wasn’t until last year that I started ‘analyzing’ my online presence with Instagram. What am I sharing and why? Do I take note of every image and how it looks in my feed? Not that we would try to ‘perfect’ or lie about our lives, by any means, but understanding our feeds are extensions of our businesses and what we post matters. In light of this recent learning, I want to share a list with you today about the Instagram Do’s And Don’ts For Business.

DO’S of Using Instagram for Business

DO post consistently to your feed.

DO include the link to your blog in your Instagram profile and let followers know you have a “Link in profile” to access latest blog posts.

DO tag the location of your image so others can find your account! (But be safe – don’t tag your home!)

DO add a relevant URL (your blog, YouTube channel, etc) to the “location” section by following the step-by-step instructions below:

1. Click the 3 grey dots in the bottom right of your photo.
2. Click “edit.”
3. Type in your URL and add a fun emoji!
4. When you finished typing, click “Create a custom location.”
5. Hit “Finished” and you’re good to go!

EDITED to ADD: In the new Instagram update, they have removed this custom location feature to enter in your blog URL! I hope they will bring it back soon – and have chosen to leave in this “DO” just in case they do… !

  • Great post! Instagram is definitely an extension of a blog or brand. I love that it is a platform that can be used for both personal and professional use simultaneously.

  • This is such a great post. I agree totally on consistency but I tend to be a rebel or hate to crop something I love. MUST. FIGHT. THE. URGE. I also find myself hesitating to post something without a great caption. great tips.

  • Thank you so much Vashti!

is it possible that adding a url in the location is no longer available :( ?

  • Ah, yes it’s changed!!! The new update eliminated this option and it’s SO annoying! Hoping IG will revert back to this original feature.

  • Wow thank you SO much!!

  • Using iPhone shortcuts for groups of hashtags is genius! Definitely going to implement that strategy soon. Thanks for sharing!

  • Morgan O’Neil

Love these tips, especially adding shortcuts for hashtags to your phone… can’t believe I never thought of that! Thanks :)

  • Yes! That’s one of my favs too!

  • Really helpful, sharing with my social media team, thanks!

  • Love this! I’m definitely bookmarking this page to refer to later. I also recently started using a program called Gramblr to post directly from my pc (it functions as a mobile emulator!) It’s helpful, since I have an old-ish iPod, and keeps my content looking more polished.

  • Awesome ideas. These is very helpful. Thanks so much.

  • Hey Jamie! Nice article, but in the very beginning i stumbled upon something i encounter quite rarely. You mentioned geotags, whose decreasing popularity is very graphic. Unfortunately these tags have become a way for spammers to find your account, that’s why more than 70% of users never use them. To reach out your potential audience it’d a good idea to search for it on zengram.net and then track with iconosquare.com (or other such apps, there are plenty of them but i prefer these two). The search covering the entire town and not just a couple of bars and bakeries is much more efficient, try it;) and thanks again for the arcticle, it’s really great)

  • Thanks Stanley! This is interesting and I appreciate your reply!!

  • Serendipity Tess

Thank you so much for sharing this! This is amazing!

  • Humayun Kabir
  • Kristina Brockmann

Great reminders like posting the geo location and posting frequently! I need to remember to do those two the most!

  • Laury Elena
