Manuela Wuthrich : Artist
I was driving down the highway towards the city, the windshield wipers doing what they do best–wiping away the stubborn raindrops that refused to stop falling. I swear Vancouver windshield wipers must have 1/50th of the lifespan of California windshield wipers… or something like that, because I’m always using those babies. It’s been raining ever since I got back from California so it was no surprise when Saturday came that it was still raining. When I phoned Manuela to let her know what the dealio was, she was upbeat and ready for anything the day brought forth. I was so thankful! We had an incredible shoot and she totally rocked it out, despite the fact that it rained for the entire three-hour shoot. Noooo kidding, folks. When it rains in Vancouver, you can look forward to it stopping in… about two weeks. She was ready with the cutest little umbrella that I just loved; it added such a great pop of colour!
Manuela is a singer/songwriter in Vancouver and I was first introduced to her music at an acoustic show at the Kitsilano Wired Monk. I fell in love with her music, her style, her vibe, her voice and purchased her Summer EP that evening! She’s currently in the studio, set to release a new album sometime this Fall. We started our session at Starbucks, and spent twenty minutes just chattin’ about life… and offering up silent prayers for the rain to stop falling. Our prayers weren’t answered immediately, but hey, I hear the rain is supposed to stop tomorrow! ;) Manuela has a crazy diverse background! She was born in Kenya, lived in Switzerland for a couple of years and has been all over Western Canada (including Briercrest where she receieved a Bachelor of Arts in Music Leadership) before settling in Vancouver to pursue music. Readers if you want to see some fun videos of Manuela’s music check these out: Circling Numbers, Write it Out, and Manuela on Vancouver City Limits.
One of the first shots out of my camera. Cute!

I loved this location where we shot, so many interesting things.

Here she is, suffering in the rain without an umbrella quickly. Don’t worry; we shot fast!

This shot and the one above was taken in a cute little antique shop Manuela and I ducked into to avoid the rain. The store is called “Not Too Shabby” and I’d link if they had a website but unfortunately they don’t! However the owner was so sweet and totally let us go wherever we wanted.

Construction… gotta love it. :)

Oooh these shots in the forest are so very Northwest. Lovin it.

Favourite!

LOVE these!! she has FUN style!! and i LOVE that she’s wearing a feather in her hair!!!!! very lovely.
Good for you for braving the rain! It’s so fun to work with other artists…awesome shoot!
Such brave girls! These turned out awesome! Especially love the colors in the first ones!
I would’ve never guessed it was raining in these shots. They are fresh as always. How did you keep dry?
Wonderful shots, Jamie! Do you have any tips for keep your lens/camera dry? Do you have any protection at all?
Nicole, I just sorta keep it under my jacket and wipe it every so often with my sleeve. Not too scientific. ;)
Great session Jamie! I was in over in Vancouver from the Island on Saturday and can attest to the gross weather. In most of these you would never know it was so chilly! Have you ever used a Kata Rain Jacket for your camera? Works awesome but a little bulky
Love the umbrella ones! Great job!
Beautiful! Looks like you guys rocked it out even with the rain. :) Love the pop of color in the umbrella ones, and the ones in the forest.
Now I want to do a session with a colorful umbrella! Ahh genius. I’ll be sure to reference you when I do :)))
the pictures look great. I love the second one. Oh and I listen to her music right now. It’s sounds amazing.
btw. Her name sounds really german. More than mine actually :)
Very cute shots Jamie! Dont you love our Rad NW!!!!
oh the ones in the woods are beyond wonderful! you are beyond wonderful!
I just thought that her lastname Wüthrich, is a typical Swiss name… so I guess her Dad is Swiss (as I ;) ). And she looks so faboutastic in these pictures, wonderful job, congratulations.
