Father’s Day Surprise

Jun 21

Intriguing? Yes sir & ma’am, my mother (who makes fun of my frequent typos, the curse of a fast typer, but alas, doesn’t seem to prove herself much better on the above sign!), my brother and I have had something up our figurative sleeves for the past two days. Father’s Day is today… obviously… and every year I never know what to buy. Books, CDs, DVDs, tools, something electronic, a hybrid of all these things? (Hey, you never know. Maybe an audio-book-on-CD+DVD-that-can-be-used-as-a-hammer-when-turned-sideways-with-an-electronic-clock-on-the cover. Yep.)

Enter my mom, master of wonderful ideas. She’s a go-getter and likes nothing better than thinking of a project and tackling it head on. The project? Completely re-organize our 3 car garage as a gift to Dad! She emailed me about it and I was SO down for the idea. This also meant I could stop hunting for an audio-book-on-CD+DVD-that-can-be-used-as-a-hammer-when-turned-sideways-with-an-electronic-clock-on-the cover. Score.

While we were hauling out box after box of unorganized junk, I said, “Hey Mom! I’m going to blog this! I should take some before photos!” That idea didn’t jive too well. Blog world, she was too embarassed to have the before shots on the world wide web. You know you’ve got an organization problem when… ;)

My Dad was home from work feeling sick for one of the days we organized, which made the secrecy a little more complicated. He was getting antsy because he couldn’t go in the garage. Aparently he needed in there. Why? Just because he wasn’t allowed in, of course! I believe he said one day during lunch at Wendy’s together, “Can’t you just throw a blanket over it? Whatever it is? I want to get in the garage.” Sureeee Dad, we’ll just throw a blanket over every square inch.

Behold, here are the beloved after shots! We revealed the garage to my Dad in true Extreme Makeover: Home Edition style. We were just missing a few key ingredients… Ty Pennington, the tears (I’ve never seen my Dad cry and I don’t believe the first time I do will be because of a clean garage,) and a giant bus. However we did stand outside the closed garage door and open it all dramatic and such.

I love you so much Dad! I can’t wait to continue living each new year out with you as my Father. You are a man of great wisdom, a man of style, a man who loves with all his heart and now… a man with a clean garage.

Will my suitcase fit in there now? Cause either I was gonna have to call Jenny Craig and drop some pounds or come to Vancouver with no clothes next time. There wasn’t room for the both of us.

(love you and miss you and see you soon and your mom and overalls and BURP!)

If my dad didn’t love his chocolate covered raisins and leaf blower so much, he’d probably be jealous. You just need a picture of your dad’s face when he saw it!
