December Means

December 20, 2012

You’re taking a Christmas break.

I work for myself and I work from home. So for the next week, “you’re not working” is something I have to be reminded of every morning. I love the winter. Winter says “rest” to me. Back in my high school days, I made it through the Fall (and every other season) by thinking about the next reprieve: Thanksgiving, Remembrance Day, then… Christmas. Two weeks of freedom, oh glorious freedom, from somebody else’s schedule. Although I no longer live by someone else’s schedule (so glad!), as a photographer shooting 25+ weddings a year, the winter still feels like freedom.

Yesterday, I got to celebrate my friend Shinae.

I met Shinae a few years ago, through my youth group. I remember telling her “We should hang out one day” and she said “Ok sounds great – do you know I leave for 6 months in Australia the day after tomorrow?” Ha. No. I did not. But Shinae came back from Australia and I rejoiced. We became friends. We have delightful memories together. A road-trip to Osoyoos. Coffee times on cold December days near the beach. (Even though she doesn’t drink coffee. “I have no idea why I would ever leave my house to go sit in a coffee shop.”) Shinae spent a year in Hawaii, studying the Bible on a YWAM Base, and again, I missed her dearly. But she came home. And one of my favourite memories this summer was a sleepover on her bedroom floor. Sudoku competition before bed (Smoked her. Challenge me. I’ll smoke you, too) with two fans pointed directly onto our faces, sweating like crazy with nothing but a sheet on each of us. (Most homes don’t have A/C in the Vancouver area.)

Catherine and Erik’s wedding day was on a beautiful Saturday in July. It was hot, hot, hot, as Catherine and her five bridesmaids got ready in her & Erik’s apartment. With amazing headbands by Carmen West, a custom designed short, flirty wedding dress and glamourous hair, this wedding day was one of my summer favourites. A first look between the bride and groom overlooking the ocean in Kitsilano, a sunset ceremony behind Brock House Restaurant, fabulous food and one of the best first dance songs (“Come Over” by Estelle) made this day a winner. Catherine and Erik’s Brock House Restaurant Wedding was also featured on Style Me Pretty.

Chanel and Sam first met in the Summer of 2007. A group of their mutual friends were headed out for a night on the town–and Sam was immediately drawn to Chanel. But Chanel describes their first meeting as “no fairytale” and “not love at first sight.” She did think Sam was the most hilarious person she had ever met but absolutely not “her type.” Sometimes, relationships take time. And throwing all those ideas of “our type” out the window. ;) So… although Sam and Chanel occasionally saw each other, they weren’t an official couple until two years later, in 2009.
