Our Love Story
welcome back to the three-part mini-series on second shooting. if you’d like to read part one: why i love second shooters + part two: where to find & train awesome shooters you can get all caught up! today we are going to be discussing the fine little details of hiring a second shooter. booking a second shooter, what to pay your shooters, how to outline image usage rights.
i mentioned in part one of this three-part series on second shooting, that the first seven weddings i photographed i did so alone. why? i didn’t know who to bring! i was seventeen: i didn’t know a lot of other photographers, certainly didn’t think i could afford to bring someone else along & wouldn’t know the first thing about training them. halfway through that first wedding season, i decided i wanted help. i knew lots of photographers hired these “second shooters” for some reason, so i gave it a go.
my first year jumping into the crazy world of wedding photography was back in 2008. i photographed my first wedding on a beautiful day in May: an adorable couple named tamara & dean. i was seventeen years old. still in high school, yep, in my final year! i had only second-shot 3 weddings before my first solo wedding and i shot my first wedding completely alone. my first wedding season, i photographed 11 weddings & the first 7 i did were without assistants or second shooters!
