it was january of 2008 and a brand new semester of hillsong international leadership college in sydney, australia. two canadian students named carly & theo met on the first day they moved into the same apartment building, through a casual conversation on the balcony. a few nights later, a small group hung out for dinner and games and these two “officially” met and started a friendship. they didn’t started dating right away, even though theo said he would have been ready to. ;) one: there was a no-dating rule the first year of college and two: the timing wasn’t right. a year and a half after meeting, these two friends started dating and have been together ever since.
other fun facts: carly & i went to the same high school. carly & theo first emailed me while i was shooting a wedding in australia. we chatted back and forth about sydney and they recommended a restaurant where they had their first date — we ate there and it was wonderful. ;) kinda fun.
i am really pumped about carly & theo’s wedding. excited to be a part of their day and meet their friends and families. so many little answers on their couple questionnaires made me smile. for example… three things carly loves about theo? he loves jesus more than he loves her. he’s a big dreamer. he treats her better than any man ever has. [winner!] theo also defines their style as wannabe indie… they aren’t really but “they like to dress like it.” hahaha. join the club, guys.
in their spare time, these two love exploring the city looking for a great cup of coffee [their initial wedding inquiry said they were coffee fanatics] or cooking together or traveling. [not a surprise, seeing as they met halfway across the world!] something else i love about their story, that reminds me of my mom, was the rule that neither carly nor theo was allowed to meet, date and marry an australian. the parents wanted them home. ;) when both sides found out these two had found another canadian, they decided it was a-okay. parent’s stamp of approval: check!
carly & theo are very involved in their church and they have such hearts of service. i love seeing their tweets about serving and i love that their favourite time of the week is sunday morning. i want to be a couple like that. it’s encouraging.
